Painter Calvin Grimm: an exhibit

LP13A08_CalvinGrimm_Final_082813-poster

Abstract expressionist painter Calvin Grimm pours everything into his paintings—his emotions, his life experiences, and particularly his love and respect for nature. Though there are few recognizable forms in his paintings, it is not just abstract ideas he represents in oils. It can be something so specific as the image of oil-soaked wildlife trying to flee the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez and BP oil spills. Enjoy this short tour of three of his works.

Mending communities: fabric artist Clara Wainwright

"Mending Baghdad" by Clara Wainwright. Photo copyright Richard Howard.

When communities have stories to be told or wounds to be healed—and all of them do—art offers a powerful answer. Fabric artist Clara Wainwright has used her art in other charitable ways, but this idea of using it to build, unite, and heal communities is a hallmark of her body of work. Listen to her talk about it in our audio interview.

Breaking silences: musician Chloe Flower

LP12A01 Chloe Flower Final_101612-poster

Classical pianist Chloe Flower is aware that the gruesome problem of human trafficking and sexual slavery isn’t exactly easy to just bring up in a conversation. So she’s hoping her music will do the talking. With the help of legendary producer Babyface, she has married classical music and hip-hop in a song called “Revolution.” A friend of slave trade survivor Somaly Mam, Flower is donating all of her proceeds to the Somaly Mam Foundation. In filmmaker Dalton Gaudin’s interview with her, she talks about her music and about the SMF, and sits down to play a bit at the piano as well.
