A musician’s dream: Malcolm Cross and The Possibility Project

Teens who join The Possibility Project spend a year working with the organization, creating and producing their own musical. As you might imagine, the magic of this organization is in results that go way beyond the birth of a new work of theater. Here’s our interview with professional composer Malcolm Cross and teenage foster child AJ Patterson.

“I’d never had anyone there to support me.” You’d never guess it, hearing foster child Adreanna “AJ” Patterson sing. She attributes much of the confidence and skill she exhibits now to her participation in The Possibility Project, who use the arts to empower youth to change their lives and communities for the better. AJ wrote the song “Shine” with professional composer Malcolm Cross, who directed a Possiblity Project musical in which she took part, and who helped develop her natural talent into the vibrant and soulful voice you hear on “Shine”. Hear Malcolm accompany her in a really fantastic performance of this potent inspirational song.

Social-practice artists use their creativity in a variety of ways to improve the social welfare of those around them. Art projects of this nature are difficult to critique, almost never end up in a gallery, cannot be collected, and are most frustratingly impossible to define. In a recent article, “Outside the Citadel, Social Pracitce Art is intended to Nurture,” New York Times arts writer Randy Kennedy describes a number of such projects and programs, begging the reader to ask, how is this art?

Who ever said we are defined by our life circumstances? Fifteen year old artist Inocente has lived homeless and undocumented in San Diego, CA since the age of nine. Despite difficult obstacles, Inocente has relentlessly pursued her dream of becoming a painter. Her heart-wrenching story was finally heard by audiences world wide, as the documentary she inspired took an Oscar last Sunday.
